This exhibition will showcase works by nine out of fifty-two Japanese Art Brut artists from the exhibit at Art Brut Japonais II in Paris, including the works by Japan’s two leading Art Brut artists, Shinichi Sawada and Marie Suzuki, as well as five artists whose works are shown outside Japan for the first time. We hope that the various artworks made with unique ideas will show the limitless possibility of creation.
“Art Brut” (raw art) was advocated by French painter Jean Dubuffet in 1945 to describe works created by people outside the professional art world who are not swayed by stereotypes.
About “Trans-Port”
Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery, which opened in Jinnan, Shibuya-ku in 2017, has been pursuing ways to increase diversity in society through art in cooperation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The gallery is temporarily closed for renovation and will reopen in 2019.
Prior to its grand reopening, the gallery will hold three exhibitions in Tokyo under the title of “Trans-Port” throughout the year. Just as many ships visit from distant countries and exchange diverse cultures at a real port, the objective of this project is to provide opportunities for visitors to discover many different types of expression and people. Each exhibition has its own different theme to find out how art could contribute to diversity from three different points of view.
