Opening up our physical self, with bodily stiffness as a clue
Presenting an experiential program led by artist IKEGAMI Keiichi, who views the stiffness occurring in one’s muscles and joints as a unique record of one’s life, and creates paintings and three-dimensional works exploring this view. A variety of programs will be held during the event, from casual workshops to improvisational performances featuring music and dance. Taking “stiffness” as a starting point, we will explore the flexible and resonant relationship between oneself and others, and between inner and outer.
*This program will be conducted in Japanese.
About the Performance Series "RAW"
The performance series "RAW," which is part of the Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery Interactive Program is a project that develops a place for "live expression" that is difficult to handle in the form of an exhibition, such as music, dance, theater, and dialogue, based on the reactions of the artists and the audience. Expressions that do not fit into a box will be shared as site-specific performances that take advantage of the characteristics of the gallery located in Shibuya. ▼"RAW" Archives

About the Artist
IKEGAMI Keiichi
Because of frequent childhood experiences of illness, Ikegami became interested in the stiffness arising in the body’s muscles and joints as well as sensations and memories evoked by touching the body. He has since created paintings and three-dimensional works expressing the invisible energy inhabiting the body and the sense of pressure and signs of something inside that are felt when touching it. He holds exhibitions of his work in Japan and abroad. In recent years, through collaborations with musicians and dancers, he has been working to create places where everyone from children to adults can discover the "fascination" of examining bodily sensations and resonating with other people.

“Wear” your bodily stiffness by displaying body memory on a T-shirt
This workshop involves seeing a white T-shirt as your body and placing red stickers on areas where you feel stiffness to visually portray sensations and memories etched in your body. *T-shirts cannot be taken home.

Applying the concept of time in video to spaces and projects, Yamashiro turns “time” only experienceable in that particular place into an artwork. In 2006, formed the artist collective “Nadegata Instant Party” with whom he exhibits works throughout Japan. Additionally, as an educator at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM], has developed and implemented original workshops and produced numerous educational outreach programs. Seeing white T-shirts as their own body, people working in pairs place red stickers on the areas where they feel stiffness so as to visually portray sensations and memories etched in their bodies. The T-shirts, displaying red dots in striking patterns mapping the different traces of stiffness in each person’s body, are lined up in the venue. In this way, the personal existence of people other than us and the invisible connection among us are made clear.
