SHIMA Eiko Artist Talk
at Narimasu Art Gallery
Artist SHIMA Eiko with her “Kaleidoscope” series (No. 100 size works) at “Art Brut 2025 Touring Exhibition Encounter with the Known, welcome to the world of autobiographical bricolage!,” Venue 1, Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery.
SHIMA Eiko creates dense collage works using cutouts from daily advertising flyers. Self-taught in paper cutting, pasting, and collage techniques, the artist has continued creating works late at night after finishing housework and caregiving. At Narimasu Art Gallery (located in Itabashi city), the third venue of the Art Brut 2025 Touring Exhibition Encounter with the Known, we will hear from this Itabashi-based artist about her work and creative process.

SHIMA Eiko
Born in 1943, Tokyo Prefecture. Live in Itabashi city, Tokyo. After retiring from work, she devoted herself to creating paper cutouts, paper-pasting, and collage works that she learned independently. She has continued creating steadily, late at night, after finishing her housework and caregiving. She creates intricate collage works by cutting out motifs related to daily life-such as houses, furniture, fruits, and jewelry-from advertising flyers and pasting them together piece by piece. Major exhibitions include "Museum of Mom’s Art" (Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery, Tokyo, 2022), "Sunday Production Studies" (Tomonotsu Museum, Hiroshima, 2023).
