Art Brut 2025 Touring Exhibition
Encounter with the Known,
welcome to the world of autobiographical bricolage!

Exhibition Overview

This exhibition will travel to three locations in Tokyo, introducing six artists whose works, created with unique ideas and methods, have attracted attention in Japan and abroad.
'Bricolage' is a method of making things by improvising combinations of everyday objects or by responding to a need. 'Bricolage' is characterized by the diversion of everyday items, found by chance, or discarded objects from traditional uses and roles.
Through the artists' 'Bricolage', the creations sometimes take unexpected forms. At the same time, the works leave behind strong traces of the artist's life. We hope that an encounter with their works will provide an opportunity for visions to experience the mundane and the known, as well as the creator's way of life woven by one and only inevitability. We hope you will enjoy the encounter with the known that you have not yet seen.

Artists

IGUCHI Naoto
Born in 1971, Mie Prefecture. He creates portrait photographs by placing his face and favorite items from his surroundings on a copier and adding movement to evoke a sense of fluctuation. This unique expression, stemming from interactions with facility staff, has become a daily routine that has continued for over 22 years. It has now evolved into works produced through impromptu collaboration with visitors to the facility. Recent major exhibitions include "Opening and Connecting" (Okazaki Mindscape Museum, Aichi, 2024).

SHIMA Eiko
Born in 1943, Tokyo Prefecture. Live in Itabashi city, Tokyo. After retiring from work, she devoted herself to creating paper cutouts, paper-pasting, and collage works that she learned independently. She has continued creating steadily, late at night, after finishing her housework and caregiving. She creates intricate collage works by cutting out motifs related to daily life-such as houses, furniture, fruits, and jewelry-from advertising flyers and pasting them together piece by piece. Major exhibitions include "Museum of Mom’s Art" (Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery, Tokyo, 2022), "Sunday Production Studies" (Tomonotsu Museum, Hiroshima, 2023).

SHUJI Takashi
Born in Hyogo Prefecture (1974-2021). He painted with a matière that conveys thickness and movement by layering pastels repeatedly. Through bold composition and coloring, as well as Shuji's unique perspective, his works evoke the inherent formal beauty of commonplace everyday objects. Major exhibitions include "Art Brut JAPONAIS" (Halle Saint Pierre, Paris, France, 2010), a solo exhibition "Shuji Takashi: A Quiet Gaze" (Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, Gallery Wing, Hyogo, 2021), and numerous domestic and international exhibitions and collections.

TAKEDA Hiraku
Born in 1988, Yamagata Prefecture. The work of stuffing disposable chopsticks into milk cartons evolved into a total of eight pieces, the largest of which reached over two meters in height, completed in about two months. The disposable chopsticks, typically used and discarded daily, seem to undulate back to life, suggesting a process of returning to their original arboreal form. The gravity-defying forms are infused with organic energy. Recent major exhibitions include "POCORART World Exhibition 'Chance and Necessity and...' "(3331 Arts Chiyoda, Tokyo, 2021).

TSURUKAWA Koji
Born in 1973, Hyogo Prefecture. The countless red dots scattered across the paper surface are stains created by the bleeding of oil-based pen ink that has penetrated the paper. Deformed letters and numbers, sounds, and words he heard, along with his own emotions, are written in the spaces between the dots as if they are floating there, evoking quiet moments of creativity and daily life. Recent major exhibitions include "Art Brut 'Humanity and Nature in Japan ーBEYONDー' " (Borderless Art Museum NO-MA, Shiga, 2022).

NOUDA Yuka
Born in 1966, Saitama Prefecture. She collects discarded thread and fabric scraps from her studio, creating objects she calls "Noudama" by winding and compacting them. The soft lines overlap to form cocoon-like and human-shaped figures. Combined with vibrant, lively colors, they exude vitality as if they might start moving at any moment. Recent major exhibitions include "Outsider Art Fair in New York 2025" (Metropolitan Pavilion, New York, 2025).

Space Design

tamari architects

An architectural design unit established in 2022 and based in Nakatsu, Osaka. Beyond architectural and landscape design, they value the process of connecting with communities through hands-on creation and place-making, along with the dynamism that emerges from this process. Using an interdisciplinary approach to “design, create, and use,” they adopt a flexible mindset that welcomes various elements and a practical, tactile sensibility into their architectural work. They were responsible for designing the venue for the “Symbiosis Art Festival” held in Kyoto from 2022 to 2024.
