Fiber! Survivor! A Means Right Here, Close at Hand: CHIKARAISHI Saki, In-Residency Production and Exhibition is a program featuring art production and exhibits by CHIKARAISHI Saki, who creates art using fiber media such as thread and yarn.
Chikaraishi has until now employed knitting as a communication tool, creating large numbers of artworks with a focus on “connecting” with things, people, and communities. Witnessing the growing uncertainty of our world in recent years, however, she has shifted away from opening herself to many people and returned to a basic focus on herself and her circumstances, trying to find a different way of connecting.
“How would you survive if all you had in the world was yourself and thread?” Such is Chikaraishi’s new theme. For her, fiber media is no longer just a material for art creation but a closely familiar material she can depend on for her own survival. Thread, the material she is always using, is a means that is always right here, close at hand.
Based on this theme, she will create and exhibit new works during this program using “surplus thread” while taking time to interact with visitors. Won’t you join her? Exercise your imagination along with Chikaraishi and try to find a connection with others and the world “if all you had was yourself and thread.”
