About Kids meet

The "Kids meet" series of children’s programs creates opportunities for children of diverse backgrounds to meet by chance, encounter things they could never have imagined, and talk to each other through art experiences. Our aims are for these experiences to broaden the way children see the world and expand their worlds, and to draw out in the children a rich imagination that respects diverse values.

Kids meet × Studio oowa 「Koen」~Creating Space to Belong~

There are children who like the prickly feeling of grass on a lawn, and there are children who like sparkling things. The things that make these types of children feel at ease may be different. So, there are no answers that are absolutely right or wrong. Kids meet × Studio oowa “Koen”, and in order to create spaces where children can belong, teachers from a School for Special Needs Education patiently observe the children on a regular basis to find each child’s unique characteristics and based on the information/knowledge of special education materials developed together with Studio oowa, along with the ideas of artists and creators, “places” are developed. Based on the things that each different child may like or feel at ease with we search for “places” for them.

About the Title

The title “Koen” has the multiple meanings of “park”, “performance” and “reading” or “lecturing”.
“Park” = a place where they can just be
“Performance” = a place of expression or creation
“Lecturing” = the sharing of information or knowledge or “practicing” (what one preaches)
To happen to be present together, expression or creation, reading or lecturing. All of these define the “place” where they occur.
During the given times that “performances” and “lectures” are scheduled. We hope that the title “Koen” with all its meanings can be a “place” where things are experienced.

Introduction of “Studio oowa”

oowa logo

Led by the photographer Hajime Kato, “ Studio oowa” is a “place” in Yokohama dedicated primarily to children with disabilities. The Studio’s name “oowa” is based on an original word spoken by a boy with Down Syndrome who has a speech impediment. It refers to acts or actions that society still can’t respect or recognize as words, and it involves activities aimed at searching for “places” where original communication can occur based on respect and sharing.
