Artist IMAMURA Ryosuke and blind artist MITSUSHIMA Takayuki, who are engaged in a continuing dialogue about “the senses,” will exhibit their works and invite guests to lead workshops. The event is a research program the two artists will conduct as a prelude to an exhibition* they are scheduled to hold in February 2025. Visitors will have chances to experience how other people’s senses differ from their own, share the differences in their values, and seek out possibilities for creative expression in their experience of each other’s worlds. In the exhibition scheduled for 2025, Imamura and Mitushima will exhibit the new works they create on the basis of their research.
* Exhibition “Project on the Senses—Any Point “P” in the Domain of Sensations”: After holding this pre-event and conducting a research project with invited guests, the artists will hold an exhibition to present the project’s results and a record of its findings. At that time, selected works previously displayed in the 2023 Kyoto exhibition, IMAMURA Ryosuke x MITSUSHIMA Takayuki “The Edge of the Senses,” will also be displayed. The exhibition is scheduled to be held from February to May 2025.
Lives and works in Kyoto Prefecture. Employing various media including installations, video, painting, and text, Imamura Ryosuke examines small events in everyday life and expresses them in forms that act on the viewer’s memory and senses. He first encountered Mitsushima through “The Kyoto Archive of Art by People with Disabilities” project operated since 2018 at “art space co-jin” (Kyoto Prefecture) by the Kyoto Culture and Art Promotion Organization for People with Disabilities.
Imamura’s many exhibitions include Yokohama Triennale 2011 at the Yokohama Museum of Art (Kanagawa Prefecture, 2011) and the 5th Shiseido Art Egg at Shiseido Gallery (Tokyo, 2011). He has worked in Europe as an artist-in-residence and as an overseas training program participant. Collected by: Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art (2017).

Born in Kyoto Prefecture. Mitsushima Takayuki lost his sight at the age of ten. While practicing acupuncture for a living, he has explored new expressive methods to communicate his own physical sensations. In addition to “touchable paintings” employing tape and cutting sheets, he employs other original methods of his own, such as “tactile collages”* and “nail series.” In 2020, he opened studio “Atelier Mitsushima” as a base for exploring new approaches to barriers.
Mitsushima’s many exhibitions included “KALEIDOSCOPE: Six Individual Expressions" at the Setagaya Museum of Art (Tokyo, 2003) and "MOT Satellite 2019 Wandering, Mapping” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Tokyo, 2019). Collected by: Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (2019), others.
*By touching materials that combine various textures, viewers can sense the world that Mitsushima knows through his senses.
