The video series “Motif Trekking” is an interactive program by the Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery dedicated to individuals who have pursued diversity and inclusiveness in art since the 1990s, pioneering new fields with different motivations and exploring new settings and forms of expression. The program shines a spotlight on these pioneers and the trajectories of their careers.
Traveling back in time and focusing on the diverse mentalities and vibrant creativity of the featured individuals, each approximately 5-minute episode of the video program asks one of them to revisit their own key motifs, both the ones that motivated their activities and ones that newly emerge as themes when looking back on those activities.motif 01 Alternatives
Talk: KAJIHARA Noriko (Director of MOB Museum of Alternative-Art)
In 2001, KAJIHARA Noriko reclaimed the closed Koguchi Elementary School in Nakagawa Town (formerly Bato Town), Nasu District, Tochigi Prefecture, and opened the MOB Museum of Alternative-Art as an exhibition space. As the name suggests, the museum has been a trailblazer in Japan as an activity and exhibition space for art genres in opposition to mainstream art such as outsider art and Art Brut. Upon opening the museum, Kajihara decided to make it a gallery devoted mainly to exhibiting works by people with disabilities. This episode interviews Kajihara about her intentions behind opening the museum and the over-20-year trajectory of her career, focusing renewed attention on the motif of “alternatives.”
