INOUE Hisako, an artist whose art concept is the relationship between smell and memory, will be invited as a lecturer to experience “smells” with participants. The participants, including the seeing, the blind, the hearing, and the deaf, will discuss “memories of smells” each of them feels. An exhibit depicting each of their “memories of smells” will be created through the workshop. Learn about “smells,” enjoy their resonance and discomfort, and trace your “memory of smells.”

Workshop Everyone will share and discuss their memories through the scent and taste of original medicinal tea and an “interesting smell” that they have brought from their homes. Olfactory researcher SHIRASU Mika will talk about the sense of smell.

Participants will reflect on the smells they have experienced since they were very young and share the memories of smells they have experienced at each milestone in their lives to create a “timeline of smell.”
【Day 3】 Saturday, May 21, 10:00－17:00
“Mini Kun-kun Walk” + Preparations for Report Exhibit “Tracing My Memories with Smells”
Participants will create a concept piece related to “smell” that will be exhibited. In addition, a mini “Kun-kun walk” will be held to enjoy the “smell of the city” while walking around the area surrounding the gallery.

Inoue produces popular workshop "Kun-kun Walk (sniff walk)" that concept enjoys the relationship between the sense of smell and memory, and it focuses on the historical environment, culture, and natural environment. It held in museums, libraries, parks, airports, botanical gardens, educational institutions, and several companies, around the world. She did the "The Library of Smell" exhibition and workshop (collaboration with an olfactory researcher: SHIRASU Mika and a sound artist: SHIBAYAMA Takuro) at Museum Villa Stuck in Munich in 2017-2018. She has developed the olfactory workshop program "Smelling our way through the zoos" is collaboration with WWF Japan and several zoos in Japan. This program got a prize the Good design Award 2019.She was a finalist of The Art and Olfaction Awards Vol.5 in 2018 in London, participated in the Roppongi art night 2018. So now the Story of Smell online workshop has been held since 2020.
Project Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences in the University of Tokyo, recently received the Research Award for Young Scientists of the JASTS. Research theme is to identify how odorants trigger a particular behavior or emotional changes.
