Overview

TSUZUKI Kyoichi began writing about contemporary art scenes as a university student. he published ‘Outsider Art’ and ‘Outsider Art II’ in ART RANDOM art anthology project between 1989 and 1991 and pioneered the introduction of Western Art Brut / Outsider Art trends to Japan. In this talk, TSUZUKI will look back on the situation at the time he published ‘Outsider Art’ (1989), the 50th volume of Art Random, featuring works from the collection of the“Outsider Archive,” which was active in the UK in the 1980s, and will discuss how he came to this point and his attitude toward his own work, which continues to the present day. He will also talk about the background of the publication and his attitude toward his work.

TSUZUKI Kyoichi

Editor, photographer and Journalist.
Born in Tokyo in 1956. Began writing about contemporary art scenes as a university student. Worked as a magazine editor for POPEYE and BRUTUS. 
Published Outsider Art and Outsider Art II in ART RANDOM art anthology project between 1989 and 1991 and pioneered the introduction of Western Art Brut / Outsider Art trends to Japan. To this day, straddling diverse fields from the urban outside to folk, fashion, and contemporary art, he continues his fieldwork and communication efforts, taking advantage of his unique perspectives and experience. At the Museum of Roadside Art, that opened in 2023, a subset of artworks that he has been collecting for years will be on display.
